This is the story of “Machinery Row,” a grandiose urban redevelopment project on the banks of the Root River in Racine Wisconsin. What exactly was there, and how did it assemble itself down there on the 20 acres by the riverbank? The large buildings that are the remaining infrastructure of the industrial past were projected to be the backbone of the proposed 65-million-dollar development. They had faded from the public’s attention through the years. But a few high-minded folks thought they had a better idea for how to use the land and buildings.
